Steps of Rhinoplasty Surgery
Step 1- Anesthesia – General anesthesia or intravenous sedation are two kinds of anesthesia given to patients. The intravenous sedation actually numbs the targeted area of the surgery and it is given along with local anesthesia so that patients feel relaxed during the surgical process. When patients get general anesthesia, he goes into a deep sleep. It is the surgeon that decides which medication would work in the best manner.
Step 2- Incisions – The area of incision varies depending upon an open or closed rhinoplasty procedure. In the case of open rhinoplasty, incisions are made along the stip of tissue separating the nostrils. In closed rhinoplasty, hidden incisions are made inside the nose for making smaller changes in the shape of the nose. With the help of these incisions, skin covering cartilage and nasal bones are raised and necessary changes are made in the nose’ structure.
Step 3- Monitoring – During entire rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon monitors the blood pressure and the breathing rate of patients in order to ensure that the procedure is going smoothly.
Step 4- Reshaping Nose Structure – As per discussion with the patients, a surgeon starts with the nose reshaping process. For reducing the shape of the nose, cartilage or bones are removed. In case of increasing the shape, additional cartilage (septum) is used by taking cartilage from the ear if required.
Step 5- Closing Incisions – Once the desired changes are made in the nose, incisions are closed with the help of little stitches. Sometimes, additional incisions are made to alter the size of nostrils. If required, a splint is applied for speeding the healing process and protecting it from trauma or injury.
